How to Read an XAUUSD Chart

The timeframe hierarchy, structure reading and minimal chart markings that make an XAUUSD chart usable instead of decorative.

Most XAUUSD charts contain too much. Indicators stacked on indicators produce confirmation for whatever the trader already wanted to do. A usable Gold chart holds price, a handful of levels and a session marker.

Timeframe hierarchy

Working top-down prevents the most expensive mistake on Gold: taking a countertrend M5 setup into a daily level that has not been reached yet.

  • Daily — trend, major levels, and where the current week sits in the larger picture.
  • H4 — the swing structure that defines whether pullbacks are buyable.
  • H1 — intraday structure and the levels for the session.
  • M5/M15 — execution only. Never form a bias here.

Reading market structure

Structure is a sequence of highs and lows. Higher highs with higher lows is bullish structure; the trend is intact until a prior swing low breaks with a close beyond it. That break is the objective event that changes your bias — not a feeling that the move looks tired.

On XAUUSD, mark only the swings that produced a real displacement. Micro-swings inside a range are noise and will make you flip bias several times a session.

Candles in context

A long lower wick means nothing on its own. The same candle at a swept prior-day low after a downtrend into a daily demand zone is information. Read the location first, then the candle.

What belongs on the chart

  • Prior day high and low.
  • Asian session range.
  • Two or three higher-timeframe zones.
  • A session separator.
  • Nothing else, unless you can state exactly what decision it changes.
