How to Set Multiple Take Profits on MT5 for Gold Signals

A practical guide to handling numbered XAUUSD targets on MetaTrader 5 without accidentally multiplying your position size or total risk.

A Telegram Gold signal can show an entry range, a stop loss, several numbered take-profit levels and a final OPEN target. The MT5 order window does not reproduce that list automatically: entering TP1 as the take profit closes the whole position at that target, subject to execution conditions.

This guide explains the platform mechanics, not a recommendation to enter a trade. Practise on a demo account with your broker's actual XAUUSD symbol first. No prices below are live signals, and no trade outcome is claimed.

1. Check whether your MT5 account is hedging or netting

Ask your broker which position-accounting mode your account uses. It is an account setting, not something that changes because you move from desktop to mobile.

With hedging, multiple positions in XAUUSD can remain separate. Each position can have its own stop loss and take profit. With netting, trades in the same symbol contribute to one net position. Three buy orders do not create three independently managed take profits.

On netting accounts, an opposite-direction deal reduces, closes or reverses the existing position depending on its size. On hedging accounts, a separate opposite order can open a hedge instead. Use the position's Close command for a partial exit rather than assuming a fresh Sell order will close a Buy.

How the account model affects staged XAUUSD exits.
Account modelSame-symbol entriesTypical staged-exit approach
HedgingSeparate positions can remain openSplit total volume; set one TP per position
NettingEntries combine into one net positionClose portions of that position at planned targets

2. Calculate one total risk budget before splitting targets

TP1, TP2 and TP3 are exit levels within a setup, not permission to risk your full intended amount three times. Decide the maximum money you are prepared to lose on the entire setup, then calculate the total volume from your actual entry and stop loss.

For a USD account and a broker contract of 100 ounces per lot, a $5 price distance to the stop puts approximately $500 at risk per lot before costs. A hypothetical $30 risk budget therefore allows 0.06 lots in total, not 0.06 lots for each target. This is arithmetic under stated assumptions, not a suggested risk amount or a historical signal.

Your broker's contract size, account currency, spread, commissions and fill prices can change the calculation. Slippage can make an actual loss exceed the planned amount. If entries fill at different prices, calculate each part's exposure separately and add them together.

  • Opening three positions of 0.06 lots would total 0.18 lots and roughly $90 initial risk under these assumptions — three times the intended budget.
  • Equal-sized parts are only an illustration. Choose an exit allocation that fits your plan and the broker's volume rules.
  • Check minimum volume and volume step in the symbol specification. If your permitted size is too small to split, do not increase risk simply to create extra targets.
Volume-only educational illustration: 0.06 lots shared across three exits, with the same assumed $5 stop distance and 100-ounce contract.
Planned exitVolumeEstimated initial risk before costs
TP10.02 lots$10
TP20.02 lots$10
Later target or managed remainder0.02 lots$10
Entire setup0.06 lots$30

Check your assumptions with the Gold position size calculator and your broker's contract specification.

3. Set separate targets on a hedging account

Do not remove protective stops just because a position has no fixed final target. A TP1 position exiting does not automatically move the stop on the remaining positions. Any later stop adjustment must be deliberate and checked on the relevant tickets.

  • Confirm the broker's Gold symbol, account mode, contract size, minimum volume, volume step and permitted stop distances.
  • Read the entry range and stop loss, check the current quote and spread, and calculate your total allowed volume.
  • Divide that total into valid smaller volumes before opening any orders. Include existing XAUUSD exposure in the risk check.
  • Open each planned part only while the setup remains valid. Set its stop loss and its assigned numbered take profit in the order window where supported.
  • In the desktop Toolbox Trade tab, check each position ticket: direction, filled volume, entry, SL and TP. Confirm that you have separate positions rather than one merged position.
  • Review the combined exposure after fills. Different fill prices mean the actual risk may differ from the estimate.

4. Use partial closes when managing one position

If you retain one position, a normal take-profit level applies to its full remaining volume. MT5 will not automatically close one third at TP1 and keep the rest for TP2 just because those prices appear in Telegram.

A manual partial close exits some volume now; it is not a scheduled limit order waiting at a target. You need to monitor price and execution, or use a management tool that you have separately evaluated and tested. This guide does not require an expert advisor or recommend a third-party tool.

  • On MT5 desktop, find the intended position in Toolbox → Trade and open its Close Position dialog.
  • Enter the volume you intend to close, smaller than the open position and valid for the symbol's volume step. Review the ticket and volume, then use the Close command rather than Modify or a new opposite-direction order.
  • After execution, confirm the remaining volume in Trade and the closing deal in History. Recheck the remaining stop loss and take profit.
  • Repeat at a later target only if the setup and your management plan still support it. A manual close may fill at a different price from the target you watched.

Minimum volumes and mobile checks

Minimum close size and permitted remaining size are broker-dependent. For example, you cannot assume a 0.01-lot position can be divided into three valid exits. Check the specification and test the intended close volume on demo before relying on it live.

MT5 mobile also supports managing positions, but the menus differ by operating system and version. Open the existing position's closing screen, verify the volume field and test a partial close on demo. Do not assume the desktop click sequence is identical on your phone. On netting, adding another entry can also change the combined position's SL/TP; recheck both after any new deal.

5. Understand what the final OPEN target means

OPEN is not a price and cannot be typed into MT5's numeric take-profit field. It means the remainder has no fixed final take-profit price in the signal. It is not a promise that Gold will keep moving or that an exit will be profitable.

Before leaving a remainder open, know how it will be managed: a later explicit instruction, a defined trailing-stop method or your own pre-planned exit rule. Keep a protective stop and monitor any management updates. If you are unsure how an open target should be handled, clarify it before taking the trade rather than improvising afterwards.

A partial win does not make the entire setup risk-free. The remaining position can still lose money; even a stop moved to the entry price can realise a loss after costs or slippage.

Compare these platform steps with our Gold trading signals and Telegram format. The examples show an entry range, stop loss, numbered targets and an open target; you remain responsible for placing and managing your own trades.

Before following an XAUUSD signal with multiple targets

  • Account mode confirmed: hedging or netting.
  • Actual broker symbol and contract specification checked.
  • One combined risk budget calculated from actual entry prices and stop distances.
  • Exit volumes fit the minimum and volume-step rules without enlarging total risk.
  • Each fixed TP and protective SL checked after execution.
  • Manual partial-close process practised on demo; no assumption of automatic staged exits.
  • A clear plan exists for the final open remainder and for interrupted monitoring.

Sources and platform checks

The platform mechanics above were checked against official MetaTrader 5 help on 20 October 2026. Broker specifications and execution rules take precedence for your account. Read the documentation below and verify the workflow on demo; interface labels may vary by terminal version.
