XAUUSD Trading Sessions Explained
The Gold trading day, hour by hour, and the behaviour that repeats in each session window on XAUUSD.
Gold trades close to twenty-four hours a day, but it does not behave the same way in each of them. Session awareness is the cheapest edge available on XAUUSD because it costs nothing to apply.
The session map
- Asian: 00:00–07:00 UTC (02:00–09:00 SAST) — range building, thin volume.
- London: 07:00–16:00 UTC (09:00–18:00 SAST) — direction established, first liquidity sweeps.
- Overlap: 13:00–16:00 UTC (15:00–18:00 SAST) — peak volume and range.
- Late US: 16:00–21:00 UTC (18:00–23:00 SAST) — trend exhaustion or consolidation.
Why the Asian range matters
The high and low of the Asian session accumulate resting orders on both sides. When London arrives with real volume, one of those pools is usually taken before the session's actual direction emerges. Marking the range at 07:00 UTC gives you two of the most reactive levels of the day for free.
The London open behaviour
In the first sixty to ninety minutes of London, Gold frequently produces a false break of the Asian range followed by a reversal that runs for the rest of the morning. This is not a trick — it is what happens when institutional flow arrives into a market where liquidity has been sitting untouched for seven hours.
New York and the close
US data hits at 12:30 and 14:00 UTC. The overlap window contains the largest sustained moves of the day, and also the widest spreads at the moment of release. After 18:00 UTC volume falls away and continuation becomes unreliable; positions that have not worked by then rarely start working.
